It was late September 2002 in Grand Haven, Michigan, and the skies matched their somber mood.

He'd been the victim of a brutal murder. His body stuffed into a metal box and burned beyond recognition.

Raindrops, pattered softly on the casket as the body was lowered into a grave in the potter's field.

The tombstone simply read, Unidentified Mail, May 2002, known only to God.

For the four detectives, the funeral was a chance to recommit themselves to finding justice for the victim.
