podcast. We left off last episode with a real genuine disaster. The Emperor Decius instituted a

devastating centralized persecution of Christians, the first of its kind by the Roman Central Authority.

As I'm speaking, I'm putting Roman Central Authority in air quotes, because the Central Authority was coming apart at the seams.

The northwestern and southeastern corners of the Roman

Empire were no longer under the authority of the Roman Emperor. The northern border with the

Germanic groups was a hot spot and was getting hotter by the minute, and Germanic incursions

would go deeper into the empire with each invasion.

On the eastern front, the great Shapur was making a mess of things for the Romans.

Shapur would even, for a short time, take the empire's third city, an important center of early Christianity, Antioch.
