Today's episode is episode 216 and it picks up where episode 215 left off.

In 215, we began the swing into 1960, and we got started with a mini wander by telling the story of the Greensboro sit-ins. That wander interrupted the remainder of the brief civil rights chronology

But before we get started, I just feel compelled to tell a personal story.

I think you'll understand why once you hear it. The year, I believe, was right around 1968 or

1969, give or take, and I was seven or eight and growing up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

I lived in what could probably be described as a lower middle-class neighborhood,

nothing special about it, except that the homes were relatively new at the time.

My parents had moved into what was essentially a almost new house in 1962.

I was a year old when they plopped down there, and it's there that I would

grow up. And I guess in some ways it was a pretty typical day in my childhood up until what I'm

going to tell you right now. My friends and I were playing a game of street football that day,

just out in the street in front of my house.

It was late in the day.

About dusk, and the sun was beginning to set fairly quickly.

It wouldn't be long, and most of us were going to have to retreat inside for the night.
