A chilling void filled the tiny subterranean basement, its walls made of cold stone, its floor lined with rocks and dirt.

The four adults trapped inside the cramped room shared their meager space with the old brick building spoiler and its

labyrinth of pipes sneaking across the walls.

Together the captives had fashioned a sorry excuse for a bed out of grimy clothes pelt the top the earth and floor,

although one of them couldn't even make use of the small sliver of comfort, because his legs were chained firmly to a boiler pipe.

In the pitch black darkness, two emaciated dogs joined the prisoners.

The stench of human and animal waste permeated the air, courtesy of a

lone metal bucket doubling as a toilet. It was the raw smell of despair, the smell of death.
