And thank you to the listener who got in touch about the story going live currently about Maramo moss balls. Yes, those balls of filamentous algae

that people have adopted as the easiest form of house plant are now a cause of concern because

they have been found to be harboring the invasive zebra muscle across at least 21 states of the US

where they are sold. It's a real problem because this muscle is really invasive both in the US,

the UK and elsewhere and they cause all kinds of problems with water pipes, damaging boats and fishing equipment,

and clogging up the intakes for power plants even.

So it's definitely worth, if you've just bought Maramo Mossball recently, checking your

moss ball very carefully for the invasive zebra muscle. I'll put a couple of links from the USGS

into the show notes, which give you all the information, what to look for and what to do if you find

a zebra muscle in your maramo moss ball. Basically, it needs to be destroyed and there's a few

sensible and safe ways of doing that,

including putting them in a bag in the freezer for 24 hours.

That does the trick, but there are some other methods too, so do check out the show notes for that information.
