Many years ago I worked in a shoe factory.

Well, technically, we made insoles.

We had a hot press that took one inch thick gray foam and compressed it down

The hours were long, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights. 24 hours of easy money, so people fought for those shifts.
