Many years ago I worked in a shoe factory.

Well, technically, we made insoles.

We had a hot press that took one inch thick gray foam and compressed it down

to about an eighth of an inch. That material would then run through a slitter and cut into

insoles with molds. The press had a long cycle time, about two and a half hours per roll,

and because we'd fallen behind, a few of us were asked

to come in on the weekends to help keep the press running. Double-time pay. The job was simple.

The hours were long, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights. 24 hours of easy money, so people fought for those shifts.

For safety reasons, two of us had to be there.

One particular weekend, I was working with a guy, let's call him Jim.

It was around midnight, when we both heard the faint sound of a forklift somewhere else in the shop.

We heard of the hydraulic forks lift, then the beeping sound as it backed up, nothing unusual.
