In 2020, the clinical problem solvers developed a specific subgroup within the broader organization,

women in diagnosis or WDX, that is focused primarily on elevating the presence of women in the clinical

reasoning environment. We have gone about this through increased representation of female

trainees on our team, written work on our blog,

developing a series on the podcast, and now a monthly VMR presence.

VMR has become the most consistent way that CP solvers around the world take in and participate

in clinical reasoning. As a result of this visibility, we wanted to dedicate a place on this platform

for our mission. Too often, in the morning report environment, trainees who identify as women,

sit at the periphery of the room, are spoken over, carry the pressure of representing other

female trainees, and hold back from participating due to the

fear of saying something incorrect and adding to the burden of judgment they experience daily.

These are just a few of the factors that highlight the inequities in the clinical reasoning

environment for female trainees that contribute to women having a less visible presence in this space.

Without taking intentional steps to change the structure of the Morning Report environment,

these same challenges will perpetuate inequities.

The role of the WDX VMR is to create a safe and protected space for trainees who identify as women

to share their thought processes in a public forum.

By regularly showcasing the bravery and brilliance that our female colleagues bring to the clinical reasoning space,

as well as allowing trainees from all levels to practice their reasoning skills, we hope

to cultivate a larger generation of female leaders in the world of diagnostic reasoning.

Additionally, we hope it inspires reflection in considering the experience of different trainees

in the diagnostic reasoning environment, not only limited to women, but extending to all those
