Summary

We were so fascinated by research on mindfulness in classroom management practices that we hunted down one of the researchers and demanded that they share all their secrets with us. Fortunately, we found the nicest one out there. And he even wrote a book on the subject! Dr. Joshua Felver brings the work of his research group into a deep dive into what is (and isn’t) mindfulness, how does it all work, and what’s most important for behavior analysts to know.

This episode is available for 1.0 LEARNING CEU.

Hey, everybody. Welcome to ABA Inside Track, the podcast that's like reading in your car, but safer.

I'm your host, Robert Perry Cruz, and with me as always is, well, just me right now.

But we will be joined by a very special guest in just a moment. But before we meet that special guest, I just want to say we're a podcast about behavior analysis and behavior analytic research.

Where every week we pick a topic and dive

0:38.5

into some research related to that topic. So this episode is a little bit different and that

0:44.1

kind of stems from where the idea for this interview actually came from. So if you've been

0:50.6

listening to the show for a little while, then you'll know that pretty recently we released

0:54.0

an episode on mindfulness-based interventions in the classroom.

0:57.5

And we were all very happy to see that these, you know, relatively research-based and simple

1:03.2

to run programs in terms of mindfulness-based programs, had some nice effectiveness in

1:08.6

decreasing things like aggression or disruptive behavior in the

1:11.6

classroom. And while there has been a lot of research on mindfulness-based programs for adults,

1:16.9

really it seems like the mindfulness-based research for younger adolescents and children is

1:22.7

really just starting to kind of pick up some steam. Now, while we were preparing that episode, I did a quick

1:28.8

search into some of the research. And, well, you know, beyond the articles that we discussed in that

1:34.1

episode, I should say. And notice the name Dr. Singh, B-C-V-A-D come up multiple times, also reference

1:41.0

to a Souls of the Feet curricula. So I did a little bit more digging as we were preparing for that episode.

1:45.9

And I did find that Dr. Singh, along with his colleague, Dr. Joshua Felfer from Syracuse

1:50.4

University, had written a recent book on mindfulness-based strategies in the classroom.

1:55.4

Now, this being something that I was very interested in learning more about because, you know,

1:59.4

we're only able to cover so much research in any given episode. So I wanted to do a little bit more of my own digging,

2:04.2

just kind of for my own curiosity as someone who works in classrooms. I was able to get in touch
