It all started when I was 19. I used to run down this long open road in northeast Tennessee. The area was

wide open, with only fields on either side, and barely any houses in sight. I ran this same route

every day as I was training hard before joining the army. One day I was planning to take a rest day,

but I had this strange wave of motivation pushing me to go.

It stayed with me all day,

so I finally chalked it up to just that, motivation.

It was 3 p.m., which was a lot later than my usual runs.

Normally I'd go at around 6 or 7 a.m.

I was about 3 miles in when I looked down at my phone to change the song,

and out of nowhere I ran straight into someone.

This man was the same height as me, with a long beard and a pretty

large build. He was on the ground, so I helped him up. I said, my bad, sir, I didn't see anyone

else around here. He replied, all good, but then he looked up at me, and it was like he'd seen a ghost.

I've never seen fear like that in someone's face unless I was pranking them.
