Summary

Graeme Hall explains why dogs – in particular puppies – are likely to nip at everything they can …the sofa, your slippers, your hand…! They’re exploring and learning about the world in the same way we would with our hands! However, it can be incredibly frustrating, so with the help of two listeners, Graeme talks through techniques to help nip the problem in the bud, including rewarding with toys and putting the pup in time out. Do you have a question for The Dogfather? Send Graeme a voice note and a video of your pesky pooch to [email protected].

Now once that TV show airs, I'm always flooded with a request for advice

Camberley in Surrey we have an 11 week old Labrador puppy called Mabel who is settling in well and is

just beautiful she's picking up commands very quickly and already getting into a good

bedtime routine. But we do have an issue with those razor sharp teeth. Despite giving her loads

1:18.9

of toys both soft and chewable, when she's overexcited, she does nip and bite, as she would

1:24.7

have done with her siblings, I guess. But this obviously hurts, and although

1:28.4

we say no and try to distract her with other toys that we think would be more fun, she thinks

otherwise. Is this just a phase she will grow out of, or should we try another technique

1:38.9

to nip it in the bud? Thanks. Yeah, okay, and I'll do the joke. Thank you very much. It's my podcast.

But before I tell you what's going on with Mabel, I want to hear from Alice in Spalding, too,

because she's got a similar problem, but she's been trying some very different techniques.
