We have been spending the last three weeks discussing history, various facets of history, and last week we talked about the books of history,

the books we used to study history. Today we're going to talk about the things, the non-book things.

That lovely specific word things that child makes

that child says we must be educated on.

That seems so elusive but it really covers quite a lot of things.

You know, we know books are most important in history, right? We read history.

That's a no-brainer for most moms. It's hard to find which book to use, but we often neglect the things.

So what does Sean Mason have to say about history things?

Well I would just say first of all regarding things is that Charlotte Mason didn't want children using things until they had an idea about it.

And just a couple of weeks ago I had a mom come in and tell me that she's so excited to have a

kindergartner because that means pretty soon she's going to be able to put up a timeline

in their house all through the rooms and she's always looking forward to doing that

because she never understood the chronology of history.

So and I thought well that really touches on where a lot of moms are at.

They get excited about timelines because they

understand the concept of many many centuries and that there are hundreds of dates to know and hooking them all together on this

organizational timeline, but most of the children that I know, even in second and third grade, don't have a huge concept about time.
