This is more my dad's story than mine, but I think it needs to be shared.

In August of 2006, my family was stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas.

We moved into this gorgeous duplex at the end of the horseshoe-shaped neighborhood.

The house was built in the early 1900s and had an unfinished basement,

with those pole lights that only light up the small area around you. In the basement there were also the smallest

bootprints in the cement that looked like they belong to a child, irrelevant but

still strange information.

The house had a grand staircase that only went from the ground floor to the second floor

and a back staircase that went to all four floors, originally intended for servants.

The ground floor held the main living areas, and my brother and I stayed on the second floor. I snagged the primary bedroom, which had its own doorbell.

For a six-year-old, this was awesome, but probably obnoxious for everybody else.
