fought the War for Independence from England, who had been governing

them from afar for about 150 years. When the American colonies won their independence and

established the United States of America, England didn't just go away and leave our new nation

alone. In fact, for the first couple of decades of

the United States' existence as a nation, they had to put up with a lot of interference from

England and France and Spain. You see, at this point in our history, the United States had about

a third of the land we have

right now. And in all that other space, England and France and Spain, who were always

fighting each other over in Europe, they were fighting over the land here too. I've included a map
