On this episode of Neutral, Dr. Ben Carson has lived the American dream.

He grew up in poverty, the second son of a young divorced mom, and really overcame

impossible odds to attend Yale as an undergraduate and then go on to medical school.

He became a prominent pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins, leading world-renowned

surgeries.

After his speech at the 2013 prayer breakfast, he was recruited to run for president in 2016.

He became the 17th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in March 2017.

Secretary Carson has lived an extraordinary life and I'm pleased to welcome him as my guest.

I am particularly excited to have somebody who I think is a genuine American hero or remarkable

human being with a great personal story and a deep dedication to public service.

I first met Dr. Carson at the annual prayer breakfast on February 6, 1997 when I was

speaker of the house.

Both of us were Republican candidates for president.

I ran in 2012 and Dr. Carson ran in 2016.

I was just stunned by the wisdom, the common sense, and the really great teaching skills

that he had.

I'll never forget he started by going through a series of descriptors of part of your

brain to which none of us had a clue.
