Summary

In today’s episode, we dig a little deeper with our parents, to hear & share the stories that they never told us. As we get older, we realize we (their children) are the only ones who will live to carry on our parents' journeys and legacies. From stories of their adolescence playing on the rooftops of a small village in China, to pains they felt in being separated from their own parents as they assimilated to America, to their meet-cute at a random mahjong night...we share all of this in today's episode. We hope these stories get some light as we pass down these never-been-shared tales from our parents & encourage you all to have these convos with your family members as you sit down for the holidays.  ______________ This episode was edited by Michelle Hsieh. So on today's episode, we decided to dig a little deeper with our parents to hear and share

0:29.5

the stories that they never told us. You know, there have been many times in my mid 20s, late 20s,

0:35.8

early 30s, even just yesterday. I stopped and think to myself, what I'm experiencing right now.

0:41.2

The life I have lived and am living right now will never be fully shared or even appreciated

0:46.0

by my child. The story of how Philip, their dad, and I met, the ups and downs we had throughout

0:50.6

our relationship, the slight but romantic things he would do for me, like reaching for my hand

0:55.5

when he was sitting in the front seat of a lift and he'd reach back and hold on to me while

1:00.0

maintaining conversation with a lift driver, how I said to him that that was one of the most

1:03.7

romantic things that he'd ever done and how he'd say, oh you think that was romantic? You just watch,

1:08.8

yet he never did that again. So all of these moments, the ups and downs, our college experience,

1:14.1

our careers, all of the emotions and feelings we've had leading up to become the person we are today

1:19.7

and their parents in the future. All of this will never be fully understood by our kids,

1:23.6

and even if we recap these stories in some way or form, one will likely forget a lot of the details

1:29.1

and two, they might not even want to hear it till they're a lot older themselves,

1:33.3

and maybe by then we'll forget these stories altogether. When I was a child, my parents often

1:38.7

shared bits and pieces of their past with me and I know like the basics, the overall of where they

1:44.4

grew up and how they met, but I used to listen to these stories just noticing the top level facts.

1:49.6

There's something about the traditional Asian household that makes it really challenging and

1:53.9

difficult to get to a level of intimacy where we both are at a place of comfort and we both
