host, Dr. Dennis Kim. Welcome back to trauma ICU rounds. I'm your host, Dr. Dennis Kim.

Today we're following up on episode seven in which we discuss the pathophysiology and classification

of shock.

And just as a reminder, we discuss the fact that shock is a dynamic and evolving condition

or syndrome characterized by an imbalance in oxygen supply and demand.

Further, we categorize shock into four categories, namely hypovolemic, cardiogenic, distributive,

and obstructive.

For the purposes of today's rounds, we're going to review the diagnostic and initial

management considerations for patients with presumed shock.

In future episodes, we'll take a deeper dive into specific conditions or etiologies of interest among surgical patients,

from cardiac tamponad to massive PE, septic shock, hemorrhagic shock, and more,

both from the standpoint of mechanisms through early and late management considerations.
