Summary

The title Jesus preferred to use for himself more than any other in the New Testament Gospels was “Son of Man.” According to the Bible Dictionary, this title was used approximately eighty times in the Gospels and used exclusively by the Savior to reference himself. “And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath” (Luke 6:5). But why would this simple descriptor be chosen as a majestic title of the Lord? In this episode Dr. Jared W. Ludlow, professor of ancient scripture and publications director of the Religious Studies Center, answers this question and provides greater insight to the eschatological context by discussing his article, “‘One Like the Son of Man Came with the Clouds of Heaven’: The Context and Influence of the Son of Man Prophecy in Daniel 7.” Professor Ludlow outlines the characteristics of apocalyptic literature within the book of Daniel, deconstructs the elements of the Son of Man prophecy, and connects both to Restoration scripture and the teachings of early Church leaders. In examining this work, we might learn ways to prepare and pray for the building up of God’s eternal kingdom.

Hello, why religion friends. John Hilton here. If I were to ask you, how many stories can you tell me from the book of Daniel? How many could you name?

0:10.0

Most of us could probably remember Daniel and the Lions Den, as well as Shadrack,

0:15.7

Meesach, and Abendigo in the fiery furnace. Maybe we remember the story of Daniel and his friends

0:22.1

refusing to eat the King's meat, or the stone that was cut without

0:26.4

hands that destroyed the image talked about in Daniel Chapter 2. But my guess is that most of us didn't think of the vision in Daniel 7, when Daniel has a vision of one like the son of man descending from a cloud in heaven.

0:42.0

But this just might be one of the most important

0:45.6

visions in the book of Daniel. After all, it was when Jesus Christ connected

himself with this prophecy that Caiaphus demanded his execution.

0:56.4

So the story of Daniel Chapter 7 is intricately connected with the story of Jesus Christ

himself.

1:03.0

But despite its importance, for most of us, this chapter remains a little fuzzy.

1:09.0

Part of the reason for this is that Daniel 7 falls into the genre of apocalyptic literature.

1:14.8

It's full of symbolic features like terrible beasts.

1:18.7

How do we go about understanding such passages?

1:22.0

If you tried to describe to Daniel's people a cell phone,

1:28.0

I mean, how could you describe that?

1:32.0

But maybe you could think of an image or a symbol that would

1:38.0

identify the ability to communicate while moving around in any space. Well then they could

1:47.9

understand at least the concept without the details of you know the certain thing and so maybe some of that is the reason for

1:56.7

using some of these symbols and all.

2:00.3

Although Daniel Chapter 7 can be confusing, it's an important one to understand.

2:06.6

In this chapter we see a reference to one like The Son of Man, and this is the title that Christ
