Summary

Graeme Hall helps a listener who feels her puppy is a bit of a bully when he plays with other dogs. Is this just puppy behaviour, or is the aggression something to be concerned about? She and another listener also wonder if neutering is the answer to some behavioural issues. Graeme explains when he would, and wouldn’t, get a dog neutered. Plus, with fireworks night fast approaching, Graeme talks through how to keep your dog calm. Do you have a question for The Dogfather? Send Graeme a voice note and a video of your pesky pooch to [email protected].

Hello and welcome to this the Talking Dogs podcast. I'm Graham Hall and I've been working with dogs and their lovely people for about 10 years now.

0:18.6

Over 10 years in fact. So you might know me as the dog father. Perhaps you've

0:22.5

caught me on television's dogs behaving very badly. The thing is, when the TV show airs, I'm inundated

0:28.1

with requests for advice on how to deal with various dog behavioural issues. And now I can bring you

0:32.8

the answers directly on this podcast. By the end of this, I promise, well, I hope that you and your dog

0:38.5

will have learned some new ideas and that'll keep you both very happy. In a bit, I'm going to

0:46.4

get into a topic I know a lot of people have a lot of very strong opinions about, neutering.

0:51.0

When's the time right to do it, if at all? And can it affect a dog's behaviour?

0:55.5

Fireworks night is coming up too, so do stay with me for a bit of advice about how to keep your

0:59.4

dog calm. First up, though, Sam's in Brighton and she sent me a little voice note about an

1:07.4

issue she's having with her puppy, Rebel. I would like some help. I've got a five-month-old Romanian puppy.

1:14.4

He's just a typical pain in the backside puppy.

1:17.8

But, you know, so far being easy to train.

1:20.6

But I have noticed that he is a bully.

1:25.7

And what I mean by that is he plays very well with puppies of his own size, but when he sees

1:33.8

a smaller dog who clearly is submissive or shy, he will go and stand on top of them, nip their

1:42.3

faces, nip their ears, and he just will not stop, even if I pull

1:48.8

him off and we do a timeout and we'll keep doing it unless I leave the park. To stop this,

1:54.8

should I get him castrated? Or do I have to do a specific training to stop it? Will it get worse or is it just a puppy thing?

2:04.0

Well, thanks for that, Sam. Well, you did call him Rebel. Careful what you wish for.

2:08.7

Well, we'll come back to the neutron issue because somebody else has actually been in touch about that too.

2:13.7

So we'll talk about that in a bit. But for the moment, let's concentrate on the behaviour and the training that we need to be doing so I'm listening to you
