He came too slowly.

He lay face down at the water's edge with the lower half of his body partially submerged beneath the lapping waves.

His head was pointed toward the bluff.

Over his shoulder the sun was rising, breaking pink and gold through the hazy twilight.

It was

so cold. His skinned, and all that had occurred the night before. He was shivering. It was so cold.

His skin was numb, and it made it difficult to think. His head throbbed, especially towards the base of the skull where the guy had hit him.

He felt around back there and winced.

He lumbered to his feet. Lightning bolts of pain shot through his neck as he stumbled

his way back up toward the house, toward Maryland and Chip. It was 540 a.m. on July 4th, 1954 when the phone rang in the home of Spencer Hook,

startling him awake.

Spencer was the mayor of Bay Village and Sam Shepard's friend and neighbor.

Shepard was shouting into the phone even before he put it to his ear,

My God, Spen, get over here quick. I think they've killed Marilyn. Thus would begin the long and

tragic odyssey of Dr. Samuel Shepard. A man who many believed murdered his wife.

A man who story inspired multiple TV shows and movies. A man at the

center of what many believed to be one of the greatest miscarriages of justice
