Summary

JR Harris was introduced to the Boy Scouts while living in New York City. His parents had the foresight to interest their son in things that would spark his curiosity and learning, rather than get caught up in the struggles of everyday life in the projects. This influence has led JR to the most unlikely of wildernesses, completely alone, for the last 50 plus years!

When he’s not trekking through Nepal or the Andes, JR owns and operates the oldest Black-owned research and consulting firm in the United States, JRH Marketing Services. He is also the author of Way Out There: Adventures of a Wilderness Trekker, which details a handful of his many adventures in the outdoors. Despite his constant roaming through the most remote locations on Earth, JR still proudly calls New York City his home.

Join us today as we talk with a truly remarkable person who has not only built a life around the outdoors and New York City but a life we can all strive to have.

you know, by the time you get home and, you know, your muscles, you know, heal up and the mosquito bites are gone, you know, you tend to forget the negative and remember the good stuff.

And so typically when people say, well, what's your favorite trip?

I always say my most recent trip is my favorite trip.

J.R. Harris is incredibly unique for a number of reasons. First of all, he is born and raised in New York City, and for over 50 years has used New York City as a launching pad for his incredibly remote wilderness adventures. I'm talking like the bush of Alaska, the Andes, the Himalayas, places all over the world that people hardly ever go, especially folks from New York.

1:03.3

JR has been able to live these two lives pretty flawlessly.

1:09.7

For the last literally over 50 years, he's in his 70s now and still doing adventures and still going to work every day.

1:11.0

And speaking of work,

1:18.7

he owns and operates the oldest black-owned marketing, consulting and research company in the U.S., J-R-H marketing services. And like I said, he's black. So that's another way that kind of makes

1:24.6

them unique because 50 years, doing adventures, especially

1:27.7

as someone who was black from New York City, was just almost unheard of. And in fact, he's going to

1:33.3

tell us a story about his very first trip where he, early college, decided to drive to Alaska in the

1:39.3

60s just to see how far he could go, drove as far as he can down the Alaska Highway, well into the Alaskan bush, turned it around and came back, had about 35 cents to his name in the 60s as a black 20-year-old. Pretty remarkable. And the things he's been able to do since are incredible. And if you'd like to learn more, I definitely encourage you to check out his book, Way Out There, Adventures of a Wilderness Trekker. And you can find that at j.R. in the wilderness.com. And this episode is from a few years ago. So I just wanted to play it again for Throwback Thursday episode this week. We should have him back on again soon. Talk about some of his other adventures. Talk
