Ms. Pirkins’ first major novel, Disappeared from Her Home, represented her foray into the mystery genre, and is celebrated largely as the first incidence of a female detective heroine written by a female author in the “casebook format” of detective fiction.

She wrote a total of 14 novels and is most celebrated for her creation of Loveday Brooke, who is the heroine of today’s story.

Now for our personal moment.

On Sunday, we took a drive up the canyon. We only lived 20 minutes away from Sundance.

So about this time we like to take a drive on Sunday and check out the leaves as they start to change.

There's a frequented Alpine loop that takes you right up over the mountain, but we can't take all of the zig-zagging.

And we usually listen to Disneyland music when we drive around and talk about the good times we've had when we were at the park.

One time years ago, Basil's flip flop got caught in one of the big escalators in the parking lot, and it broke the escalator.

Like the piece of metal stair broke off, and the escalator stopped.

Of course, we were at the top, so we just stepped off, but there was the biggest collective sigh you've ever heard behind us.

We tried to just surreptitiously make it to our car while everybody figured out why the elevator had stopped.

Anyway, between driving up the canyon and having peach chicken, it was a pretty wonderful Sunday.
