Summary

Ravi and Rikki start with a bit More-a-Lago on the FBI, Trump, and the reaction throughout the media over the last few days. Then they turn to Washington’s least popular bureaucrats, the IRS, as well as the country’s two most popular credit card companies: Visa and Mastercard. Each host goes over a compelling primary race this week before we wrap up with DeSantis suspending a prosecutor in Florida, and of course, one of Ravi’s Radical Ideas. Welcome to The Lost Debate Show. I'm Robbie Gupta and we recorded our episode earlier today before this Merrick Garland press conference.

0:07.3

We had a whole segment about Mar-a-Lago and the search for documents and the whole question about Trump's culpability and, you know, future legal exposure.

0:16.3

So most of this segment is still in there.

0:18.0

We just took out a few things that are now rendered moot.

0:20.3

But I wanted to just start the episode explaining a little bit about how we see the

0:24.8

events of today. Basically what Merrick Garland did was he stepped up and he said a few things of note.

0:30.0

Number one is he said that he's filed a motion to unseal the documents, particularly

0:34.9

the warrant and the property sort of inventory of what they took from Mara Lago.

0:41.0

And so they've filed this motion in federal court.

0:43.4

And what's notable about this motion is if you read it, it gives Trump the ability to block the release of these documents.

0:50.1

And so essentially the ball is in Trump's court right now.

0:53.5

The second notable thing that Garland said was that he personally approved the search on Trump's property.

0:58.4

And so he's saying, look, I own this.

1:00.4

And then the third thing he said was, look, like their standard practice is to use what he says,

1:05.3

the least obtrusive means possible.

1:07.8

And I think those words were really carefully selected because essentially what he's

1:11.0

saying is we've tried other methods to get these documents back. And that was actually confirmed

1:16.4

by reporting that happened before Garland's press conference. The New York Times and others reported

1:20.7

that the Department of Justice had actually issued a subpoena to Trump for those documents earlier in the spring, and the implication

1:29.0

is that he ignored that subpoena. And finally, Garland ended his press conference with a full-throated

1:34.5

defense of the FBI. This comes as there was an attempted attack on the Cincinnati FBI office.

1:40.3

And so I think Garland is defending his people. He's defending the men and women inside of the
