I want to share today an experimental idea of something that I've been thinking about

for a very long time.

25 years ago when I first started undergrad at Morehouse, we were talking then 25 years

ago about how few, how small the number of monuments are to African Americans across

the country including brilliant black leaders that have done amazing things but have no

monuments.

And I think it's time, past time, overdue that we really began funding these monuments

and developing them ourselves.

I have an idea of two people we should start with and just want to see what you think.

As many of you know, I'm actually a historian by training my undergraduate and graduate

degrees are in history and that training really informs so much of what I do.

I've been a teacher, a pastor, a nonprofit leader, an organizer, but I always go back to

my depth in history.

And yes, I know that having monuments of brilliant black leaders does not solve all of our problems.

So please don't start with me by saying Sean, there are actually 97 more important things

than developing monuments.
