Sometimes bad things do happen to good people. These traumatic events can be powerful, however. Many researchers are now seeing good things come out of bad experiences and now say that trauma can produce post-traumatic growth. Post-traumatic growth is "positive change experienced as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life crises". Your ability to grow is largely determined by how you perceive the cards you’ve been delt. And frankly it’s not easy… but it’s imperative.

Many researchers are now seeing good things come out of bad experiences and now say that trauma can produce what they describe as post traumatic growth. |

2:29.0 | Now, some examples of post traumatic growth include having a deeper appreciation for life. You know, maybe looking for and finding new possibilities or finding new opportunities for meaning and happiness. |
2:42.0 | Also, it often results in discovering your strength to cope with adversity, you know, possibly discovering new paths for your life, experiencing closer relationships with other people, discovering developing a new talent or even taking on a new role in society. |
2:59.0 | Listen, everyone has negative experiences. It doesn't matter if you're female or male, young or old, rich or poor, well educated or not, religious or not. It happens to all of us. |
3:11.0 | What's interesting is that people who have experienced more difficult life events are actually more likely to report growth. |
3:18.0 | You often see more upside from people who faced adversity from those who approached those difficulties with a sense of meaning and purpose. |
3:25.0 | Now, finding meaning helps you cope with negative events, which often results in someone experiencing growth. |
3:31.0 | So, post traumatic growth can be used to describe both positive personal changes experienced by survivors after a difficult or traumatic event and negative changes in the form of an increased difficulty in recovery. |
3:44.0 | Now, of course, this isn't true for everyone, so what distinguishes those who benefit from negative events from those that don't? |
3:50.0 | I'll sum it up with one word I know you've heard from me many times, mindset. |
3:55.0 | Your ability to grow is largely determined by how you proceed, the cards you've been dealt, right? |
4:01.0 | And very often it's not easy, but it is critical. |
4:04.0 | Okay, when I lost $50 million in 2008 and 2009, you know, for a while I curled up and hit under a rock and had a pity party. It wasn't fun. |
4:12.0 | But after some incredible coaching and mentoring and re-associating with what I wanted in life, I was able to reframe the experience and rebuild bigger, better and most importantly much stronger. |
4:23.0 | What researchers have discovered is it's not the specific type of event that affects your growth, but the feelings that you assigned to the event. |
