Summary
It’s no secret that green beauty is everything these days (natural personal care and beauty products earned over $1.5 billion in U.S. sales in 2017.) But long before Sephora came up with the “Clean at Sephora” seal, Romain Gaillard pioneered the modern concept of green beauty retail with The Detox Market. That was back in 2010. It was a pop-up situation on Abbott Kinney in Venice Beach. And it was the first time you could walk into a shoppe and find that every beauty product lining store shelves was not only chic but free of parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals and over 600 other questionable ingredients it’s banned from a highly curated assortment. Now The Detox Market boasts seven locations including three in Los Angeles, three in Toronto (including a swank new shoppe on Spadina Ave.), and a 2,000 square foot flagship in New York City.
Parisian by birth, Romain went to school for finance before landing in tech - so how did he wind up an early leader in green beauty? In today’s episode, we find out the pivotal moment that would change his life course forever. Boasting luxe, organic brands from RMS Beauty to Kjaer Weis to May Lindstrom, we also find out which products are the top three best-sellers in stores right now (shopping carts at the ready!)
