Summary

It would almost take living as a full-on Luddite to not know something about Taylor Swift. The sheer volume of interest, speculation, online posts, and photographs of just one person exemplifies our culture’s propensity to “obsess” over celebrities.

One thing that sets “T Swift” apart is a dogged loyalty to/approval of/fascination with her: music, life choices, and person as a whole.

And this includes many Christians who include themselves in the ranks of enthusiastic “Swifties.”

In this episode, we examine what it looks like, from a biblical perspective, to be devoted first and foremost to Jesus rather than *any* pop culture icon, no matter how much nostalgia and warm fuzzy feelings arise when we think about listening to their music/watching their movies/living vicariously through their publicly broadcasted lives.

This is not a bash on Taylor Swift but rather a call to every Christian to honestly examine to whom our affections are most devoted and by whom we are most influenced—Jesus and His holy Word…or the world.

Hello and welcome to the MS for Mama podcast. I'm your host, Abby Halgastat,

0:09.1

happy wife, Mama-Ditton, Bible-believing Christian. And we have got a fireball of a topic for you today.

0:16.2

But before I jump in, I want to remind you about Summit Ministries. You can find more at www.comit.org,

0:23.9

but it is a Christian apologetics camp for young people ages 16 to 22 who are needing maybe a boost

0:32.3

in their faith, who are wanting more answers to the naughty kind of, not an A-U-G-H-T, Y, T, Y, T, Y, T, Y, the hard, difficult issues that we're

0:42.4

facing in our culture, whether it's gender confusion or same-sex attraction, or what it

0:49.1

looks like to establish justice within the gospel and biblical accuracy and so many other issues, abortion,

0:58.6

and what it looks like to be pro-life and pro-mama and pro-baby.

1:02.5

And they tackle these issues with such clarity and intelligence and grace.

1:07.4

They bring in a panel of speakers during the two-week-long session that they hold for

1:11.6

these kids. My boys, Ezra and Simon, have been together this last summer. Then Ezra went the

1:17.0

year before that, and both of them will be going to their Georgia campus. They've been twice to Colorado

1:22.3

this upcoming year. So if that's something that interests you for your young person, you can check out

1:27.8

more at summit.org. And you can use the code Mama 24 M-A-M-A and the numbers 24 to get $200 off of the

1:38.7

tuition. So that's a great opportunity. Be sure to do it quickly, though, because that offer does

1:44.0

expire.

1:46.4

Today on our episode, I want to tackle something which is very timely. Now, 10 years from now

1:52.6

when someone listens to this, I doubt they will say who about this person, because I have a feeling

1:57.6

this person has more longevity than that, considering how long they've

2:01.9

been popular.

2:02.6

But they may not be at the height of their popularity at that point.

2:06.6

They may have peaked.
