In October 1912, Miss Kelly was sitting down with a reporter from the Washington Post.

Kelly began describing a curse that had been put on her people centuries before.

You see, Kelly was a direct descendant of chief Hawkewin, a ferocious leader who ripped

the lands from an ancient prehistoric race who once inhabited it.

There is a curse on this place, she said.

Yellow hair, cursed it.

Several years earlier, her own husband was run over by a train in a bizarre accident.

I have always wondered if it would extend to me, she said.

On the banks of the Ohio River, her people have been living for over 300 years.

For three miles, the river makes a bend between Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Louisville,

Kentucky.

The water swirled there, and in the middle is a cataract known as Corn Island.

Kelly recalled a song her mother used to sing to her about the white people who used to

inhabit their land.

The song described a giant chief named Yellow Hair.

Yellow hair and his people kept the area all to themselves, and wouldn't let the

Shawnee catch fish or even hunt their lands.

Legend said chief Hawkewin approached Yellow Hair one day, and asked them to be able to

share the land together and make peace.

Yellow Hair denied his request and said there was only enough for his people to gather

and harvest.

Hawkewin then said the Shawnee would return and overtake him in his greed and unwillingness
