elected sheriff in Graham County, Arizona. In 1988, he served two terms as sheriff. During that time, he received the NRA

law officer of the year. He was inducted at the NRA Hall of Fame. He received the 1995 Cicero Award,

the Samuel Adams Leadership Award from the Local Sovereignty Coalition, and the Gun Owners of

America Defender of the Second Amendment Award.

And it was during his tenure that the so-called Brady Bill was passed and sheriffs were told

that they had to run background checks and this was another one of those unfunded mandates,

so-called.

And Sheriff Mack in 1994 challenged the constitutionality of

the Brady bill, fought it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and in 1997, in a split decision

five to four, the decision based on the Tenth Amendment, if you can believe that, Sheriff Mack won his case. But he's also

been a tremendous proponent of the idea of state nullification, and particularly he's been

emphasizing the role of the sheriff in protecting individuals within his jurisdiction
