Hello, everyone. Hi, it's me, Jen. Jess is off this Friday, but welcome to Fat

0:14.7

Mascarra. It's interview day. Today, I'm joined by Gabriela Hernandez, who is

0:19.6

probably best known as the founder of Bessamay Cosmetics, a line of

0:23.4

historically inspired cosmetics that was founded in 2004. She got it started

0:27.6

out of the little shop in Glendale, California, but she actually began her

0:31.2

careers as a photographer and she's become a well-known makeup historian with a

0:35.6

huge collection of vintage cosmetics that she uses to inspire new products she

0:39.5

creates, but she also loans out as resources to Hollywood film and television

0:43.7

designers. Plus, on top of all that, she's an author. Her book, Classic Beauty,

0:48.4

The History of Makeup is now in its second edition. It's such an invaluable

0:52.6

resource with tons of images of vintage cosmetics, many of which are from

0:56.5

Gabriela's archives in her own collection. She's also a podcaster. I'll put a

1:01.6

link to her Bessamay podcast on our blog, and she works regularly with

1:05.6

companies like Disney and the Marilyn Monroe Estate to create limited edition

1:09.4

collections and collaboration. So I'll put links to her company, some of the

1:13.5

people and products we mentioned, all of that in the show notes. So check that out

1:17.2

if you want more information, and I hope you enjoy the interview.

1:20.6

Gabriela, I don't even know where to start though because you're a designer of

1:30.8

photographer. Like a color chemist, consultant type person, author, historian,

1:35.2

podcaster. I feel like you're multi-hyphenate, but the one thing that ties

1:40.3

your work together is of course a love of makeup. So I have to ask you, do you

1:45.6

remember your very first experience with makeup?
