About the most strenuous effort I might give out during a working year is maybe chasing some thug up the escalator at Bloomingdale's department store.

But last week, I really odded myself.

The all-stars of the police force challenged the private detectives to a baseball game

for the benefit of the vice squad.

And I wound up stiffer than a pair of starts and overalls.

Because the private detectives are quick to take advantage of the slightest opportunity,

by the eight-inning, we realized the need for some immediate strategy.

The score at that point was six to four, the cop's leading.

So I got a hold of a little blonde, I knew, and had her walk across the infield in a sweater.

The idea was to disturb the opposing team and take their minds off the game.

It would work, but it seemed that since I had last seen my little blonde friend,

she'd become quite a favorite with the police force, so they just waved hello and went about their business.

My drooling colleagues, however, had not come in contact with said hunk of fluff,

and before the game was over, three of them had picked up the bat boy and tried to bunt with him.
