Summary

The Perpetual Chess Adult Improver Series returns to hear some more reflections from an accomplished chess amateur.  This week we are joined by John Neely. John started competitive chess at the age of 36 in 2011 and has had a long road to the ECF equivalent of about 1800. John has put in plenty of hours, both as a student of the game, an OTB competitor, and as a Chessable community author who created the popular series Visualize. In our interview, John reflects on the lessons he has learned in his years of studying chess. John is pleased with his approach in some aspects of his study, but he also thinks he could have done a few things differently. Finally, we discuss John’s new project, as he is taking a break from competitive chess in order to work on a series of mystery novels. Hello, everyone, and welcome back to another adult improver edition of perpetual chess.

0:10.8

Of course, this is a recurring series.

0:12.7

It's been going on for years where instead of interviewing a top grandmaster or author or trainer,

0:19.4

we interview a fellow amateur from the chess world where they

0:22.9

talk about their passion for chess and their chess improvement advice. And we will introduce our

0:28.2

guest momentarily, but first I did want to give a couple shoutouts. Number one, to recent

0:32.7

perpetual chess Patreon subs, Martin Weir, Matt Broadhead, and Olaf. I'm not going to lie, I've been slacking a little

0:39.6

bit lately on the Patreon perpetual chess special events. I've been cramming to finish a book,

0:46.5

my manuscript, I guess you call it a manuscript, I don't know, it's nonfiction. Anyway, it's due soon.

0:51.6

But in the meantime, why not support the podcast anyway? You get access to ad-free episodes.

0:56.1

You get advanced notice of guests so you can submit questions.

0:59.6

And the special events will return soon.

1:03.0

I also wanted to remind listeners to subscribe to my free newsletter, the perpetual chess link fest.

1:09.3

Lately, I've been linking to more and more chess improvement related stuff as opposed

1:13.6

to chess news.

1:15.1

I cover both, but there does seem to be a particular interest in reading about other people's

1:19.9

blogs, about their own chess improvement efforts, both again from trainers and from

1:23.9

amateurs.

1:24.6

So be sure you're sub to that. Link in the show notes. Also,

1:27.9

anytime there's like a mainstream chess story, which sometimes can slip through the cracks

1:32.2

if it gets covered in some big newspaper or something, I always try to link to those so that

1:36.3

you can see what other people are saying about us. Last but not least, before we introduce our guest,
