Summary

It's a very Young Heretics Christmas, which can only mean one thing: we are going straight to the good stuff. In his first foray into the New Testament on the show, Spencer Klavan gets at the heart of the story of Jesus' birth and its meaning in the grand sweep of Western history we've been studying all year.

Hello, Merry Christmas. Jesus is born. Welcome to Young Heretics. That's the whole episode.

0:06.9

No, it's not actually the entire episode, but it is basically the whole episode.

0:14.6

I thought about doing a bunch of different stuff for, you know, Christmas special.

0:18.5

You think maybe you do Dickens, Christmas Carol, or I want to call life for some great piece of, you know, Western culture or even pop culture from the

0:27.8

many, many centuries of history of celebrating Christmas. And we probably will get to each of those things, you know, I'm sure we'll do other Christmas episodes in the future that will be

0:38.8

focused on some of that other stuff. But you know what? This is a show that is about the good stuff, right?

0:43.8

This is about the heart of the Western tradition and really

0:47.6

grasping and understanding the core of that tradition and of what has been most meaningful to most people in it over the course of history.

0:55.0

And so you know what? We're just going to mainline Christmas. We're just going to go right to the biblical story of Christ's

1:01.1

nativity and we're going to talk about it in the New Testament. And before I do that, I'm going to give you a word from our sponsors.

1:09.5

My dear friends at the Ancient Language Institute. This is a show about bringing the classics, bringing the West to you and making it possible for you to

1:19.0

access them and get your hands on them, removing all the ideological barriers between you and them, enabling you, empowering you to go out and read them.

1:27.4

And one important thing about that is that you don't just have to get past, you know, the

1:34.6

crazy universities and the gatekeepers there. But you also, you know, if you've never studied ancient languages, it can be very, very daunting to try to get that kind of hands-on approach.

1:43.8

So Ancient Language Institute is a place where you study ancient languages Greek and Latin and these languages, for example, Aquinas wrote, as if they were living languages.

1:53.0

So, you know, you're reading, you're speaking from day one, you're learning in a practical sort of way.

2:00.3

So if you want to try this out, go between now and January 15th, you can go to ancientlanguage.com slash young heretics and enter the code heretics.

2:10.5

H-E-R-E-T-I-C-S, just like in the title, and you will get 15% off. So take advantage of that. Now, if you want to try it out.

2:18.2

This is actually the first time we've really done the New Testament in any way. We did the Old Testament way back at the beginning of the show, because I am particularly passionate about the book of Isaiah, the prophecy of Isaiah.

2:28.9

So we've done a little bit on the Old Testament of the Bible, but we need to kind of get ourselves oriented to the New Testament, not just as a work of scripture.

2:37.9

I think a lot of people watching our Christians and treat this as a holy book, but not everybody, certainly, I know.

2:43.7

And so we're not just talking about this book as a holy book, but as a Titanic work of Western literature, as an important and central book.
