Summary

The Perpetual Chess Adult Improver Series is back, but this time with a twist. We feature a senior guest who is “more interested in sustainment than improvement”, and we have a guest co-host joining the conversation! Our guest, Paul Hedrick is a 56 year old literature and history teacher based in New Mexico. Paul enjoys listening to Perpetual Chess, but felt that older, less improvement focused chess lovers like himself were underrepresented on the podcast. To help guide the conversation, I enlisted the help of Han Schut. Han is a Chess Steps trainer, a Chessable Author and a frequent contributor to New in Chess magazine. The three of us try to sort out questions such as: Why does Paul study chess daily if his goal is not to improve? How can one know if they should shift their goals from “Adult Improver” to “Senior Sustainer?” How should one supplement the curriculum of the Chess Steps method? Both Paul and Han offered great perspectives on the different roles chess study can play in one's life, so I hope you all enjoy the conversation as I did. ado, let's get to the show.

0:35.9

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to an adult improver, or is it a senior sustainer edition

0:41.2

of perpetual chess?

0:42.3

We will discuss that in a minute.

0:44.7

And I am joined actually by a guest co-host, a friend of the pod, and a guest.

0:49.5

And I will introduce them both in a minute, but I just wanted to go over one or two things

0:53.4

before that.

0:54.8

One of them is a friend and listener of the pod who shall remain anonymous, ask me, what do I mean

1:01.1

when I say something's in the show notes? So I wanted to quickly address that for anyone else who

1:06.3

is not an avid podcast listener and maybe doesn't know when me or any other podcast host says that.

1:13.9

Basically what that means is if you read the description of a given podcast, you'll find lots more details, often links to things that we reference.

1:21.8

And different podcast feeds, like if you listen on Apple Podcasts or Google Podcasts or whatever it may be,

1:27.9

they have different restrictions about what you can put in the notes. So sometimes on like Apple Podcasts,

1:32.8

it'll cut off in the middle. And that's not my doing. That's their doing. So I do my best to have like

1:38.5

lots of details right in the show notes. Some other podcasts like Tim Ferriss, for example, he puts his show notes on his web page.

1:46.5

People do it differently.
