Summary

This week The ChickPeeps have an honest, open conversation about what it’s like to balance one’s relationship with food with one’s ethical values and how both recovery and veganism have impacted their lives. Momo and Evy are joined by vegan fitness coach and self love advocate, the fearless Bianca Taylor, who recounts her journey from struggling with anorexia to truly loving and celebrating her body. Later on, we interview the incredible Jasmin Singer, senior editor of Vegnews and author of the memoir Always Too Much and Never Enough, who shares her story of developing a binge eating disorder and how she transformed her relationship with food from self-abuse to self care. Also, on this episode…

  • ‘You can’t eat that, can you?’ The important distinction between ‘can’t and ‘won’t’.
  • Going vegan mindfully after an eating disorder.
  • Bianca discusses being a personal trainer and how she helps people in the midst of an ED.
  • ‘Good’ vs. ‘bad’ foods - how do we not backslide into this mentality of categorising foods as a vegan.
  • Bianca and Momo share how their lives have expanded since they chose the path of self-love.
  • Jasmin discusses the journey from food as an enemy, to food as a friend, to somewhere in between.
  • ‘It wasn’t until I was well into my 30s that I realised that food can actually be something that not only is a direct representation of who we wanna be and what our world view is but also something that can fill us and allow us to really sit more comfortably in our authenticity.’
  • The universal feeling of not being enough.
  • Guilt and shame. How to deal with these emotions surrounding food when we slip up as new vegans.
  • How to talk about veganism with people who’ve been through an eating disorder.
  • Switching your focus from vanity to self care.
  • ‘That’s when food was no longer what it had been for me in the 80s, which was a vehicle for changing; it was a vehicle for being in line with who I wanted to be.’
  • Letting go of an eating disorder. Jasmin and Evy discuss whether or not true recovery is possible.
  • How to deal with a perfectionist mindset when it comes to diet.
  • Body positivity and representation in the vegan community.

It's not hard to be eating.

And this week we're going to explore the topic of

0:20.9

eating disorders and veganism. As for so many people, a history of eating disorders is what

0:24.9

dissuades them from embracing veganism. This topic obviously won't be for everyone, as needless

0:29.8

to say, having or having had an eating disorder is not an inherent part of one's vegan journey,

0:34.6

which is different to all topics we've covered pretty much till now.

0:41.5

But the idea that veganism is another fancy eating disorder, as someone once told me,

0:46.3

pervades in the minds of people who see the lifestyle as restrictive and radical, and it's what prevents many people from trying it. So I'd really like to address this topic.

0:50.4

And I'd like to say for the record that I'm obviously not a licensed therapist or psychologist or nutritionist or a doctor.

And this episode is very much not how you go vegan after an eating disorder.

I can't give you advice on your journey and nor can any of the women who are going to be on the episode today.

But this is simply an honest, frank discussion about being a vegan who struggled with a eating disorder

1:10.6

because that's what I believe the kind of conversations we need to be having about a topic like this. In case it wasn't already clear, this is a topic that's close to my heart, as I found going vegan brought a lot of difficult emotions surrounding food to the surface, and it's why I can't ever pinpoint a particular date I went vegan because it really was a struggle for me. Food was an emotionally charged and dysfunctional relationship and so the process of changing

1:31.1

my eating habits for animals was beleaguered with setbacks. However, when I went vegan in a healthy

1:36.4

way with a focus on abundance, joy and lightness, my messed up relationship with food started to

1:41.3

heal almost by accident. And when I switched my mindset to doing

1:44.7

it out of love for animals and started learning about all the interesting, delicious new foods I

1:48.6

could eat and cook rather than what I was cutting out, it was completely transformative. And for the

1:53.4

first time ever, I actually became a foodie and I began to celebrate food. So I know it's a delicate
