→ Time Stamps: (00:00) An overview of these chapters.(04:21) Nephi’s positive attitude contributes to who he becomes. He breaks his bow and makes a new one.(07:32) Ishmael’s death causes many in the family to murmur.(15:23) Nephi possesses the accoutrements of kingship, which may help demonstrate that he and his successors have the right to rule. The sword of Laban, the Brass Plates, and the Liahona may be associated with the Israelite Ark of the Covenant.(24:26) Nephi is commanded to build a boat, but his brethren oppose him. The Lord shocks Laman and Lemuel into obedience.(39:41) As they journey across the waters, Nephi’s brothers bind him with cords. After being threatened with death from a great storm, they loose Nephi’s bonds.(42:58) These passages illustrate Nephi’s ascent. Welcome to talking scripture. I'm Mike and I'm Bryce and we're really excited to be

0:27.6

here today. We're going to talk about first Nephi 16 through 22. There's so much

0:32.0

in here Bryce. That's right it's almost like we push the pause button in 1 through 7. Let's pause and talk about this wonderful vision of the tree of life. And now we're coming back and unpauseing and continuing that journey to America.

0:44.4

So let me jump in by reminding you that one of the great messages of First Nephi is the doctrine

0:49.3

that how we respond to our trials shapes our character. In 1st Nephi chapter 1 verse 1

0:55.0

looking back on his life Nephi recognizes that three main things shaped his

0:59.6

character. He says his family the teachings of his parents his father his adversity and the things of God and I guess I would guess that each one of us could say the same thing that the things that have had the most impact on our lives are our family, the trials that we've had, and the things of God.

1:17.0

So let's focus on trials, and so here's what we're going to do.

1:20.0

We're going to make the assumption that at some point point Nephi and Lehman are kind of on the same spiritual level.

1:26.0

Maybe that was never the case, but at least they were close.

1:29.0

At least they were when boys, they started out kind of at that same innocent level. By the end of First

1:35.0

Nephi they're going to be very very different men, not because they went through

1:39.6

different trials, but because the attitudes they had, the attitude they met each trial with was different.

1:46.6

And so I think one of the great messages the Lord starts the Book of Mormon with is, it's not the trial you go through it's the response to the trial that shapes

1:55.8

our character so in one through seven we tackled three challenges

2:01.3

leaving Jerusalem going back for the plates, and then going back to pick up Ishmael and his family.

2:08.8

And now we're going to tackle four in this podcast.
