The Black Swan was close enough to London to attract a fair number of regulars, people willing to drive the 20-odd miles to enjoy the excellent food.

Monsieur Jean-Paul, small and dark, greeted Kate and me at the door as if there were nothing he'd been looking for too more than a visit from the police.

"'He confirmed that Lady Barone and Mr. Lampart had dined in the restaurant three days earlier, and produced his list of bookings to prove it.

"'He remembered that they had arrived a little before a quarter to nine and had left shortly after eleven.

When I turned to the night Diana Travis had drowned, Monsieur Jean-Paul remained as helpful as before.

He remembered Dominic Swain's party only too well, not the kind of client we usually attract.

It was not agreeable. I was relieved when they left the dining

room. Sir Paul wasn't with his wife's party, I understand. That is so, when they arrived, Mr. Lampart

said that Sir Paul hoped to join them later, but he phoned at around ten to say that it would not,

after all, be possible. Who took the call, I asked?

My doorman Henry.

Henry believes that ten minutes earlier he actually saw Sir Paul in the car park.

We sent for Henry.

Oh, yes, sir, I saw him.

How certain are you it was Sir Paul Barone?
