John Hickenloper is as unlikely a politician as his name.

He started off as a research geologist, and as an assessor after his job was phased

out, tried his hand at opening a brew pub that became an empire.

From there he was encouraged to run for public office and became an innovative mayor of Denver

and a very successful governor of Colorado.

Now he's being talked about as a candidate for president.

I sat down with Governor Hickenloper at the Institute of Politics this week to talk about

his unlikely path, this unusual time in which we live, and what his plans might be for

Senator, I want to say this, Martin Luther King said we all came over on different ships,

but we're in the same boat now.

I noticed in looking at your history that the ships that brought your folks over came

over a lot sooner than the ones that brought my folks over.

You've got a deep lineage on one side way back to the Revolutionary War.

So my mother's family, I was raised outside Philadelphia with my mother's family, and

they were an old, old, old Philadelphia family.

My mother was a 12th generation Philadelphia, the Morris family.

But it's funny, in the Great Depression they lost whatever wealth they had was largely

disappeared.
