In 2010, Ed Meliband shook up British politics by defeating his brother, David, in a most

unusual battle for leadership of the labor party.

He served for five stormy years as leader of labor, culminating in a crushing defeat

in 2015 and in full disclosure.

I helped advise him in labor in that unsuccessful campaign.

But I came to know Ed as a bright, caring, committed public servant who really took his

responsibilities seriously.

Ed came to the University of Chicago Institute of Politics this week to talk about his experiences

and the current state of British politics in the era of Brexit.

Your brother was here some time ago and we, so some of this history for faithful listeners

of this podcast may be familiar but still important and interesting.

Now I want to talk to you about your folks and their history which didn't begin in Britain

but during the war.

Tell me about their journey.

Well, it's an extraordinary journey and it makes me feel incredibly privileged.

My dad and his father left Belgium on one of the last boats out before the Nazis arrived

in 1940 and came to Britain leaving my father's sister and his mother behind and they ended

up in hiding in a Belgian village which took in the end of about 16 of our relatives, all
