0:39.4 | goals and goal direction. Yeah. Most of the time when we feel successful it's because we |
0:44.1 | completed some kind of goal, right? No matter how large or small. So if it's all right with you, |
0:48.7 | I'd like to start talking about feeling successful in the context of having and keeping goals and |
0:54.9 | having a positive relationship with those goals. To start with a question, why do we |
0:59.6 | have goals at all? Why is having a healthy relationship with our goals important for |
1:04.5 | various kinds of mental health? Relentless necessity of goals is so obvious that we |
1:12.0 | very very often ignore it. |
1:14.8 | And part of what informs my own thinking about this |
1:18.7 | is that coming up through the human potential movement, |
1:21.6 | I encountered many people who with good intentions, and |
1:25.9 | intentions are goals, emphasize the non-dual nature of reality. |
1:31.8 | It's all just one thing in which there are no meaningful distinctions |
1:36.0 | between things and in which it is problematic to make one thing better than another. |
1:42.0 | And obviously for us to have a goal, it means to make one thing better than another. |
1:43.0 | And obviously for us to have a goal, it means that it's preferred in some way. |
1:47.0 | There is some sense of valuing it. |
1:49.0 | Or to put it kind of simply, over there is better in some sense than over here. |
