Summary

Kathryn and Coach Julie explore how gentle humor can support recovery—without minimizing the seriousness of binge eating or eating disorders. You’ll learn how bringing some laughter into certain situations can help pull you out of fight-or-flight and harsh self-criticism, so you can make clearer, more grounded choices. You’ll also learn how humor can soften perfectionism, and change the way you relate to urges so that you can more easily dismiss them.

Welcome to the Brain Over Binge podcast, where you learn a simple, brain-based approach to ending binge eating.

I'm Catherine Hansen, your host, and I'm so glad you're here with me today.

0:14.4

I love today's topic, which Coach Julie came up with.

0:17.5

Julie and I are going to talk about something simple, but surprisingly powerful, and

0:21.8

that is how gentle humor can support recovery, not by minimizing what you're dealing with,

0:27.8

but by helping you soften perfectionism, by helping you change how you relate to the urges,

0:33.0

and by helping you let go of harsh self-criticism. We're going to share how to use humor in a way that

0:38.7

keeps you grounded and compassionate, while still taking your recovery seriously, and how that shift

0:44.7

can help you stay connected to your higher self and what you truly want. Before we get into that

0:49.6

conversation, I want to share some details about the new version of the brainover binge group that, as I mentioned in the previous episode, I'll be leading starting on January 1st, 2026.

1:01.0

Beginning in the new year, there will be four group coaching calls per week. Each of those calls will be approximately 30 minutes, and the calls will be coaching only, meaning that we'll use that time for

1:12.1

your questions, challenges, and direct guidance. The call time is approximate because the goal is to

1:17.7

make sure that everyone who wants coaching gets coaching from me. So we may go a little longer

1:22.6

when there are more people in attendance that day, or it's possible that we may wrap up earlier

1:27.4

if it's a smaller

1:28.2

group. There are four different weekly call times, and I hope these call times will help people

1:33.1

in many different time zones and in the midst of busy lives. In Eastern time, the calls will be

1:38.6

on Sundays at 11 a.m., Tuesdays at 12.30 p.m., and Thursdays at two different times, 9.30 a.m. and 9 o'clock p.m.

1:48.3

If you're a group member, you're welcome to come to any or all of the calls, and if you cannot attend

1:53.1

live, recordings will be posted. The group forum will also have a new structure in 2026 with three

1:59.4

main sections. The first section will be a daily check-in

2:02.6

for accountability around the two recovery goals, dismissing urges and eating adequately. The next section
