Jesuits who began coming to China in the mid 16th century starting with Ricci and

Ruggieri. But long before the Jesuits, however, there were others who played roles, small

and large, in the early propagation of Christianity in China. It was a hard sell back then and the religion couldn't have appeared more alien in the eyes of the Chinese of antiquity.

Jesus, not being Chinese, that alone made it difficult for the locals to embrace it as

readily as Buddhism and Taoism. But that didn't stop these fishers of men who came from the lands of Christendom with their piety, their zeal,

and industry to bring the teachings of their Lord Jesus Christ to the people of China, and of course to everyone else in between
