I met David Lit when he was a young speechwriter at the White House in charge of the White

House Correspondent Association dinner speech for the present, which is essentially a comedy

routine.

He was assembling jokes from everywhere, including some of mine and taking some of his and

melding it into a hilarious monologue for the president.

Now David has written a book called Thanks Obama, My Hopey Changey White House Years, which

is a hilarious and moving memoir about his arc from a newbie field organizer for Obama

in Ohio in 2008 through his years in the White House.

It's a great read, and we had a great conversation about it the other day when he visited the

Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago.

David Lit, it's good to see you again.

It's good to see you too.

I had a good time reading your book because I relived some history myself in that book,

and it reminded me, I was at a different place in that 2008 campaign than you were.

Just a little bit.

But it was actually guys like you and Gals like you who kind of kept us going and kept

us inspired when that thing.

There were several moments there when the Savans in Washington were writing us out of the

script, and you could go to Iowa, place like Iowa, and see a whole bunch of kids working

their hearts out.
