I woke to the sound of knocking, not the kind you'd hear at a door. This was inside the walls, frantic, like fists pounding to escape. I sat up, heart hammering, and looked

across the dark room.

Esther was already awake.

She was sitting upright, eyes wide, frozen.

We didn't speak.

The knocks came again, louder, closer.

We clutched our blankets like they could shield us from whatever was happening.

I could feel Esther shaking from across the room.

My mouth went dry.
