When I worked for President Obama in the first two years of his administration, one of my

colleagues was a bright young economics whiz named Brian Deese, who I promptly named Deesele

because he was the staff director on the project that ended up saving the American auto

industry.

Really one of the most inspiring people I've met in public life in a very low key and

authentic way as you can hear for yourself.

Brian Deese, great to see you, one of my favorite people from campaign days, from White House

days.

So you were 30, 31 years old and you were a deputy on the National Economic Council and

you were deeply involved in the Recovery Act.

You were the staff quarterback on the auto bailout that saved the American auto industry.

You went on to be a deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, acting director

of the Office of Management and Budget and then you ended up as the president, senior advisor

and with a portfolio like climate change and economic relationship with China and so on.

So I'm thinking that you were Jared before it was cool except you didn't have the relationship.

How did you get to that point when I picked up the story that you were in the position

to do those things for the president because you didn't marry his daughter?

Well it's a question that I sometimes ask myself because it certainly wasn't my hope

or expectation or plan that I would happen into the series of events that led me to that

string that you just described.
