Summary

Ever wondered what chores (if any) are appropriate for a five-year-old? What about a fifteen-year-old? IS there a biblical precedent for giving our children responsibilities in our home, and what does that look like practically day to day?

We'll answer all these questions and more in today's episode about kids' chores, responsibilities, allowances, and privileges in the home. I'll also share our family motto that has helped to keep our eye on what our attitude should be toward others as we do our work "as unto the Lord."

In a world that often screams confusing phrases like, "Your child didn't ask to be brought into the world, so he/she shouldn't have to contribute to your home," (huh??), I want to encourage you that giving kids responsibilities, routines, and life skills is one of the kindest and best parenting moves we can make. Not only that, but fostering an others-minded way of thinking leads to kids who are less likely to be lazy and self-obsessed--two things about which the Bible has a lot to say!

However, I want to share with you some of what we are doing in our home that has worked well for us and it's been a lot of trial and error and it's been a lot of doing things that didn't work as well that we learned from.

And so I hope that that will help you kind of leap over some hurdles if you are in the younger years or maybe even just tighten up a ship that you feel like is sinking at this point in the tour department

I will share some ideas that I've gotten from some other really wise mamas that I've adapted into what we do and then I'm going to start with a scripture which is always my goal is to come back to what the Bible has to say and I'll tell you why I chose this

1:36.1

scripture once I've read it. Galatian 6 5 through 7 says for each will bear his own load let the one who has taught the word share all good things

1:45.9

But the one who teaches do not be deceived God is not mocked for whatever one sows that he will also reap. So there's a lot of things that the Bible has to say

1:58.2

about sewing and reaping. There's a lot that the Bible has to say about the talents and responsibilities and just privileges as well as heavy things that were handed by the Lord in our lives to teach us both responsibility and also

2:16.2

reliance on the Lord to mature us and to grow us up in practical things and in our

faith in Christ and to make us aware of how important it is that we actually

contribute meaningfully, even from an early age, to the concept of work that must be done around the house,

2:37.2

to the concept of bearing one another's burdens, to the concept of something that we use as our family's motto, which is being a blessing.

2:46.4

So whenever we go out, we like to say that we're going to be a blessing and that's what
