I knew of Tony Blinken when he was a highly regarded foreign policy expert, the staff director

of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the 2000s.

But I came to really know him as the National Security Advisor, the Vice President Biden

during the Obama administration.

He went on to run the National Security Council as Deputy National Security Advisor and

then became Deputy Secretary of State.

He's been involved in all the major foreign policy decision making and debates of the last

few decades.

And he spent this spring at the Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago where

I sat down with him for this conversation.

Tony Blinken, it's great to have you not just here, but at the Institute of Politics where

you've been a fellow this spring.

It's been great to be here, David.

And engaged in great dialogue with these kids here.

You know, people, I've done a lot of these by now and there are all kinds of different

stories and there are the sort of Horatio, Alger stories.

Yours is not that.

You're not from the wrong side of the tracks.

You grew up in New York.

I guess your dad was prominent in the investment banking business.
