Summary

Retired FBI Special Agent Richard Marquise discusses Pan Am Flight 103, which exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988, after a bomb was detonated. All 259 people on board were killed, and 11 individuals on the ground also died. Marquise initially led the FBI’s Pan Am Flight 103 investigation. 

  

Richard Marquise is a retired FBI agent with 31 years of FBI service including over 20 years as a manager and leader of squads, and FBI field divisions and 14 years of experience training law enforcement officials from over 30 countries including Albania, Kenya, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Philippines and Serbia, among others. He is the author of Scotbom: Evidence and the Lockerbie Investigation.

1988, Pan Am Flight 103 took off from London's Heathrow Airport on the second leg of its journey to New York City.

At 7.03 p.m. Greenwich meantime, the Boeing 747, known as Clipper, made of the seas, leveled off at 31,000 feet.

Just north of the England-Skotland border, an explosion blew up a

basketball-sized hole in the fuselage. The bomb, which was located in the forward cargo hold,

detonated near the left wing. Power went out instantly, and the plane began to break apart,

plummeting, raining debris into the small town of Lockerbie, Scotland,

with residents in the path. When the few allot-in wings and a section of the main body crashed

into one house, the subsequent explosion created a 155-foot-long crater and sent a fireball shooting

up into the sky. One policeman reportedly compared it to the

mushroom cloud from a miniature atomic bomb. The couple that owned that house died, as did nine

neighbors raging in ages from 10 to 82. Homes up to 75 yards away lost their roofs, and those even further from the blast had their doors and windows shattered.

Pieces of the plane came down elsewhere in Lockerbie as well, causing dozens of fires.
