In 1973, there were 148,000 total adoptions in the United States,

with 59,200 of those adoptions being non-relative adoptions.

So if you were born in the 1970s and adopted, accessing your adoption

records would depend on the state that you were adopted in, as laws regarding adoption record

access vary widely. Many states in the 1970s had sealed records, meaning you might not be able to

take additional steps to access information

about your birth parents, which could include contacting the adoption agency involved
