Summary

Ram Dass gives a moving talk on the Guru's grace and the story of how he received a true secret teaching from his own Guru. Recorded in June 1973, Ram Dass leads a discussion around the concept of Dharma, or one's path in life, and how he discovered his own Dharma through secret teachings from his Guru. We may go to great lengths to avoid our path, but our inner voice continues to bring us back. Ram Dass also explains the role of karma yoga and what it means to 'die into service.' We learn to work with our desires and move right into the fire. Through this work, we free ourselves from attachment and find a deeper connection with God. So, Ramdas had been back to India where he went the second time in 1970.

1:04.2

In fact, I came back with him in the spring of 1972 and so he had been back in America for about a year teaching.

And in this particular talk, it starts out talking about grace, the Guru's grace,

1:25.2

for everyone to be able to get together to have this gathering that he was at on that day.

1:32.2

So, the Guru's grace to have Satsang, which we were told many times, not just back in that day,

1:43.2

but over time, that being able to gather together with like-minded people is one of the most beneficial practices that we could enter into.

1:59.2

And so, to this day, I always recommend to people.

2:04.2

However, you can find a Satsang, a Sanga, a like-minded group to be able to hang out with,

2:13.2

just have some food together, chant together, meditate together, listen to talks, read together from books of people who have tread the path before.

2:30.2

And I might mention in that, since I'm thinking about it right now, at Ramdas.org, we have a fellowship program in which we put people together in different parts of the country,

2:49.2

and they gather together from small groups to a little bit larger groups on a regular basis.

2:57.2

So, I'm going to write to info at Ramdas.org if you have any interest in trying to see about joining a group that may already be started through this Ramdas fellowship.

3:12.2

And at the same time, we do Ramdas immersion retreats in California, and you might ask about that at info as well.

3:25.2

Info at Ramdas.org. So, a little divergent there, but I just, it made me think when Ramdas talked about the grace of being able to get together.

3:35.2

And then you talked about when life brings joy and prosperity, you say, how great is the Guru's grace?

3:45.2

And, but then, can you say that when you have fallen down, when there's despair, or when there's negativity, can you still say that?

3:55.2

Very difficult. And there's one great example of this. His name is Swami Ramdas, who lived, I think, until the 50s or early 60s of the last century.
