Summary

A new ad that was released by Sprite in Argentina to celebrate LGBT pride has gone viral for featuring trans individuals, including what looks like a drag queen, and their parents. What wasn't featured in the commercial? Sprite's actual product, strangely enough. Calls for boycotts have already started online, and we'll have to wait and see whether this will turn into another Gillette fiasco and example of failed advertising (get woke, go broke!), or if pandering to progressive audiences will ultimately work. Today we're going to be talking about the latest ad to be released that makes most of us go.

0:15.0

What the hell were you thinking?

0:18.0

First to get started, let's just have a little bit of a chat about what the purpose of an ad even is.

0:22.0

Why are these companies spending so much money

0:24.8

to get these messages in front of audiences? If you would have asked a brand 10 years ago why they

0:29.6

bothered with ads, they'd tell you something along the lines of, of oh it's to inform people about our product

0:35.0

it's to tell them why our product is best and why they should spend their money with us instead of

0:39.3

our competitors or it's to raise brand awareness and sure that's still probably what most brands would say today.

0:45.3

However to me at least it feels like in 2019 more and more brands are instead seeing ads

0:51.1

as a chance to let people know how progressive their marketing departments are.

0:55.2

I mean sure ideally you talk about the product a little bit at least mention it toward the end maybe

1:00.1

but you know what even if you don't it's not a big deal because the main point is the

1:04.4

progressive message it's really shocking to me just how many ads there are right now that

1:08.9

don't actually feature products and we're going to be doing a bit of a challenge together.

1:13.6

We're going to be watching this one ad and seeing how long it takes them to

1:17.2

actually mention the product or brand that they're supposed to be advertising for.

1:21.7

But first I do have a quick message from our sponsor

1:24.5

Express VPN and because we like to kick it old school on this show the ad will

1:29.1

actually be about the product. I know just crazy mind-blowing stuff here.

1:34.0

Recently, over 100 million people had their personal information stolen in a major data breach.
